What is Chicken Lollipop ?

Chicken Lollipop is an appetizer which belongs to the Indian – Chinese Cuisine. Chicken wings are specially cut and converted to look like Lollipops. This is called as Frenched chicken wings. Chicken wings consists of two parts – drumettes and wingettes. Chicken lollipops can be made from these two parts. If you are a beginner and this is your first time making Chicken lollipops then you should go with the drumettes, since it’s much easier to shape a drumette into a lollipop. The juicy, tender chicken lollipops are marinated and then fried to make the most delicious chicken lollipops.
The shape of the chicken wings looks like a lollipop, and that is the first requirement to make chicken lollipops. This shape is achieved by cutting loose the meat from the bone end part of the chicken wings and is collected down to form the shape of the lollipops.   1. Chicken lollipops – 500g
  2. Oil for frying.
  3. Vinegar – 1 tbsp.
  4. Soy sauce – 2 tbsps.
  5. Tomato ketchup – 2 tbsps.
  6. Kashmiri red chili powder – 1 and a half tsp.
  7. Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp.
  8. Salt to taste.
  9. Corn flour – 1 tbsp.
  10. Rice flour – 1 tbsp.
  11. Egg – 1 .

The first recipe is for Dry Chicken lollipops. This is much loved by kids as they love to hold the bone part and pretend it to be the lollipop candy. In this Dry chicken lollipop recipe the spices can be altered if you are preparing it for kids.
The second recipe is Chicken lollipops with Sauce. It is much cherished by the adults and it can be prepared mild as well as hot and spicy. The additional thing that we have to do in this recipe is making the sauce. The ingredients used in sauce are ubiquitous in the kitchen. So here let me share the ingredients needed for making sauce for Chicken lollipops with sauce.

Ingredients for Sauce:

  1. Onion -1 medium size
  2. Ginger – 1 tsp chopped
  3. Garlic – 1 tsp chopped
  4. Red chili sauce – 2 tbsp.
  5. Schezwan sauce – 2 tbsp.
  6. Corn flour – 1tbsp
  7. Salt – as desired
  8. Oil – 3 tbsp.

Now we have the ingredients that are needed for both the recipes of chicken lollipops.

Lollipop Chicken Recipe – Preparation for Marination.

It is best to first marinate the chicken lollipops with yogurt, as it makes the chicken lollipops tender. But this step is completely optional. And if you want to skip this step it’s perfectly fine.


Let’s start by mixing the ingredients to make a perfect batter for the marination of the chicken lollipops.

In a bowl add corn flour, rice flour, tomato ketchup, soya sauce, vinegar, salt, Kashmir red chili powder and ginger garlic paste. Add little water and blend them well into a smooth batter. Now add the chicken lollipops and egg and mix it well. Make sure the chicken lollipops are smothered in the batter. Keep it aside in the refrigerator for minimum 2 hrs. If possible marinate the chicken lollipops overnight as it allows the chicken lollipops to be softer and the flavors are blended deep in the lollipops.

Steps for making Dry Chicken Lollipops

Step 1 – In a wok, heat enough oil for deep frying the chicken lollipops.

Step 2 – Pick the marinated chicken lollipops one by one and carefully put them in the oil.

Step 3 – Let them fry till they are beautiful golden brown and the chicken lollipops are tender. This is done basically in 7-8 minutes.

Step 4 – Remove the chicken lollipops and place them in the plate. Make sure to take out the excess oil by placing a kitchen napkin in the plate.

Step 5 – The delicious Dry chicken lollipops are ready to be served. Serve these delicious chicken lollipops with schezwan sauce!!

Steps for making Chicken Lollipops with Sauce

Step 1 – Prepare the dry chicken lollipops following the recipe mentioned above.

Step 2 – Heat oil in a deep pan. Add the finely chopped ginger and garlic. In a couple of seconds add the finely chopped onion.

Step 3 – Once the onions are translucent, add the red chili sauce, schezwan sauce and salt. Fry them well and keep stirring it so the sauces doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.

Step 4 – Add the chicken lollipops and mix it well with all the ingredients.

Step 5 – Blend corn flour in half a cup of water. Make sure to dissolve the lumps. Add this corn flour mix in the pan, blend it well. Smother the chicken lollipops with this thick sauce.

Drumsticks VS Chicken Lollipops

The difference between chicken drumsticks and chicken lollipops is the same as Day and Night – they both are two different parts of the chicken. Chicken lollipops are made of chicken wings and are shaped just like drumsticks whereas drumsticks are the part of chicken legs. Drumsticks are much heavier in weight because it has more meat whereas chicken lollipops are on leaner side. Chicken lollipops can’t be made with chicken drumsticks.
